Minimum Order Quantity: why it exists and how it moves

MOQ is not a wall the factory puts up to test you - it is set by the machine run behind the price. Once you know which machine, you know which lever to pull.

Where the number comes from

A minimum order usually traces back to one machine: a dyeing vat that needs a full load, a mould that costs real money before the first part, a print cylinder per colour, or a loom that is not worth threading twice. Ask which one, because the answer tells you whether the number is arithmetic or habit.

Factories quoted in the same hall will give you three different minimums for the same product. That is normal: the one who quotes lowest is usually pricing a larger run.

The levers that actually move it

Offer the rollout, not the discount: four orders a year at the higher quantity is more attractive than one small trial order with a hard bargain attached.

Accept a surcharge for the small run. A small-order premium is a real cost, and paying it openly is cheaper than pretending it does not exist.

Take the factory's stock colour or stock material instead of your own. A special colour is often the entire reason for the minimum.

Combine two or three SKUs into one run when they share material and construction. Mixing sizes in one order is easier than mixing colours.

A trial order is not a sample order

A sample order buys you a physical object to test. A trial order buys you evidence about how the factory handles a real order: documentation, packing, the lead time they actually achieve, and how they answer when something is wrong.

Say which one you are asking for when you ask. Factories answer a sample request and a trial order request differently, and mixing the two is how a buyer ends up testing a hand-made sample and ordering from a line.

Write down quantity and tolerance

Agree the minimum per SKU, and agree what happens if the shipment comes in under or over. A tolerance clause in both directions is normal in garment and textile orders; leaving it out means the shortfall is discovered at the port.

State whether the minimum applies per colour, per size or per order. The same three-letter word means three different quantities.

When the minimum is not real

If the quoted minimum can be halved in a single reply, it was never tied to the machine, and the price you were given first was not tied to the quantity either.

The reverse is also worth watching: a factory that will not state a minimum in writing, or will not state the price at that minimum, has not yet quoted you an order.
